Automaton

My painting, Automaton, is based on one of my favorite short stories by the 19th Century German writer, E. T. A. Hoffmann. His gothic horror story, The Sandman, describes how in polite society a woman made of wood is indistinguishable from one made of flesh and blood. Automatons were mechanical creations that were especially popular in the 19th Century.
